Dr. Malahias graduated as a medical doctor from the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens in August, 2005. He got his specialization in Orthopaedics and Traumatology (January 2016) at the 2nd Orthopaedic Department of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, with director, Professor George C. Babis.
2016 – 2017
After the completion of his specialty, he received the national clinical scholarship ‘Georgios Noulis’ of the Hellenic Arthroscopic Association. Through this scholarship, he worked as paid clinical fellow (2016-2017) at the International Centre of Hip, Knee and Foot Surgery, Sports Traumatology, ATOS Hospital, Heidelberg, Germany, under the mentorship of internationally renowned surgeons such as Professor Fritz Thorey (hip arthroscopy and minimally-invasive hip arthroplasty expert), Professor Rainer Siebold (knee arthroscopy and cartilage regeneration expert), Professor Cristoph Becher (expert in patellofemoral joint diseases), and Professor Hayo Thermann (ankle arthroscopy expert).
In November 2017, Dr. Malahias visited as Visiting Clinician the Arthroplasty Department of St’ Michaels Hospital, University of Toronto, Ontario, Canada (director: Professor James Waddell).
In April 2018, Dr. Malahias got his PhD academic title (grade: “excellent”) from the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens. The topic of his PhD was about ultrasound-guided infiltrations of Platelet-rich Plasma (PRP) in nerve entrapment syndromes (supervisor: Professor George C. Babis). His doctoral thesis was the first study internationally to examine the therapeutic value of ultrasound-guided PRP injections in the carpal tunnel syndrome. Following that publication, several studies from different institutions abroad were conducted which confirmed the promising results of PRP injections.
In September 2018, Dr. Malahias moved to New York, US, to work as paid SNF CJRC Fellow at the famous Hospital for Special Surgery. The Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS) is being rewarded for 11 consecutive years (Annual US News & World Report) as the No1 hospital of the US in Orthopaedics. As part of his duties at HSS, Dr. Malahias sub-specialized in complex joint reconstructions of the hip and knee joint under the mentorship of Professor Thomas P. Sculco who has been a world leader in the field of lower limb revision arthroplasty. Dr. Malahias was the first Fellow working for the recently established SNF Complex Joint Reconstruction Center (department of HSS) that serves the city of New York as a unique access point for the management of demanding clinical cases with complex joint diseases.
In June 2020, Dr. Malahias moved back to Europe to work as paid clinical fellow at Clinica Ars Medica (ESSKA teaching center), Gravesano, Ticino, Switzerland. In Switzerland, he got his sub-specialization in shoulder arthroscopy & arthroplasty by the famous Professor Ettore Taverna and in ACL reconstruction and advanced knee arthroscopy by a living legend in this field, Professor Matteo Denti.
After returning back to Greece in July 2021, as a continuing active member of the Hospital for Special Surgery (SNF CJRC adjunct research associate) and international ‘ambassador’ of its values, Adj. Professor of Orthopaedics, Dr. Malahias commits himself to practice evidence-based medicine and to use the most up-to-date research studies and contemporary orthopaedic implants for providing individualized therapeutic management and superior results.
